This past Friday I finally got to see the King Tut exhibit at the DMA and it was awesome. Sure, a couple of reproductions were present instead of the real mccoy but all the same I was thrilled.

When I was in the third grade I fell in love with Egypt. My dream was to be an Egyptologist and delve into their culture. Eventually the dream turned to Art History in general. I wanted to work in a museum, eventually become curator of a museum and be surrounded by art. I remember painting a little wooden box in the fifth grade to resemble a sarcophagus. I put a little cardboard mummy inside, used my sister's powdered makeup to give it the sandy look, and drew an Eye of Horus on the top lid. Years later, at 19, I got the eye tattooed on the the back of my neck. It symbolizes royal power and is protects the mummy from evil spirits. That same year I finally bought a copy of the Book of the Dead. It contains the spells and rituals performed in mummification.

Lately, I've found myself struggling with what to do with my life. I've been flittering around with career ideas. Just generally lost. But this exhibit brought me back to my childhood dream. I'm majoring in General Arts right now with an English minor (starting my minor in the fall). My major is supposed to help people into future studies in Art History and other subjects so I'm already in a good place if I choose to move forward with it.

One thing that fascinates me is the death of King Tut. They apparently found many fractures, one in his knee and there were fractures on his skull which could indicate that he was killed by a blow to the head. He was 19 when he died and was only 9 when he became pharoah. It's true that his tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter and some of the fractures could have been caused while he was being transported or examined over the years, but still.

I think I have my direction back.

When life offers you a dream so far beyond any of your expectations, it is not reasonable to grieve when it comes to an end!!!
